Why does Surah Ar-Rum (30:54) show the word ضعف differently in some Mushafs? Is one of them wrong?

No, neither is wrong. Both are correct and valid readings.

This difference is something a careful reader may notice when comparing Mushafs. The letter ض in this verse carries a Dammah (ضُ) in some Mushafs, giving the reading ضُعْف (Du’f), and a Fathah (ضَ) in others, giving ضَعْف (Da’f). It is completely understandable to wonder about this difference, but it is not an error in either version.

The Quran has been preserved through multiple well-known recitation traditions, called Qira’at. Among them, the riwayah of Hafs ‘an Asim is the most widely used across the world. Within this same riwayah, this particular word has two valid ways of being recited, both with a Dammah and with a Fathah. This is not a contradiction. It is a recognised exception within the recitation tradition itself, preserved and passed down by scholars across generations.

Indo-Pak Mushafs generally follow the reading with a Fathah (Da’f), while Uthmani Mushafs more commonly use the Dammah (Du’f). Some Indo-Pak Mushafs include a special symbol ( ؔ) on this word to indicate that both readings are valid within the riwayah of Hafs ‘an Asim.

The key point is that both ضُعْف (Du’f) and ضَعْف (Da’f) are correct. The difference does not affect the meaning of the verse in any way.
