How many names does Allah have? Why does the app show more than 99 names of Allah?

Allah has many beautiful names, known as Asma’ul Husna (أَسْمَاءُ اللّٰهِ الْحُسْنَىٰ). His names are not limited to any fixed number. Some He has revealed to us through the Qur’an and Hadith, and some He has kept with Himself in the knowledge of the Unseen, which no creation knows. Scholars agree that the Beautiful Names of Allah are not limited to only 99 names.

You may have come across the well-known hadith where the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

«إِنَّ لِلّٰهِ تِسْعَةً وَتِسْعِينَ اسْمًا، مِائَةً إِلَّا وَاحِدًا، مَنْ أَحْصَاهَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ»

“Allah has ninety-nine Names, one-hundred less one; and he who memorized them all by heart will enter Paradise.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

This hadith is often understood to mean that Allah has only 99 names. But the scholars clarify that this is not what it means. The hadith is highlighting the great reward of learning these 99 names, not placing a limit on His names.

Imam al-Nawawi stated in his commentary on Sahih Muslim that the scholars agreed on this:

“The scholars unanimously agreed that this hadith does not mean that Allah has only ninety-nine names, or that He has no other names beyond these. Rather, the purpose of the hadith is that whoever learns these ninety-nine will enter Paradise. The point is entering Paradise by learning them, not that the names are limited to this number.”

To help you explore more of His names in one place, we have brought together around 130 names from different scholarly collections. Whether you are familiar with one list or another, you can find more of these names here, learn their meanings, and reflect on what they teach us about Allah.
