Dua before Sleeping

Do you want to turn your sleep into an act of ibadah? Make the intention to rest so you can wake up stronger for worship. Before sleeping, recite the duas the Prophet ﷺ taught us, like Ayatul Kursi, the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, and the last three Surahs of the Quran.

These simple but powerful duas before sleeping protect you from harm, calm your heart, and bring Allah’s forgiveness. Let’s learn these Sunnah supplications and include them in your nightly routine.

What are the Benefits of the Dua & Dhikr for Sleeping?

  • Protection from harm: The Prophet ﷺ said these duas safeguard you from shayateen and evil.

  • Reward in sleep: Following the Sunnah and remembering Allah earns reward even as you rest.
  • Forgiveness: Reciting these duas invites Allah’s mercy and forgiveness for the day.
  • Gratitude: Reminds you to thank Allah for the day’s blessings.

Things to Do before Reading Sleeping Dua

  • Perform wudu if possible, as the Prophet ﷺ encouraged it.
  • Keep your bed clean and dust-free.
  • Lie on your right side, as recommended by the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Forgive others and let go of anger.
  • Reflect briefly on your day and express gratitude to Allah.

Dua before Sleeping in Arabic and English 

1. Last three Surahs of the Quran

When retiring to his bed every night, The Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) would hold his palms together, and (whilst blowing – would) lightly spit in them, recite the last three chapters of the Quran and then wipe over his entire body as much as possible with his hands, beginning with his head and face and then all parts of the body.

He would do this three times.

Recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas

i. Surah al-Ikhlas (112):

قُلۡ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ‌ ۚ‏﴿١﴾ أَللَّٰهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ‌ ۚ‏﴿٢﴾ لَمۡ يَلِدۡ ۙوَلَمۡ يُولَدۡ ۙ‏﴿٣﴾ وَلَمۡ يَكُنۡ لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ ﴿٤﴾‏‏ ‏

Terjemahan: With the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: He is Allah (the) One. The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, He begets not nor was He begotten, and there is none equal to Him

Transliterasi: Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem. Qul Huwallaahu ‘Ahad. Allaahus-Samad. Lam yalid wa lam yoolad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ‘ahad.

ii. Surah al-Falaq (113)

قُلۡ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡفَلَقِۙ‏ ﴿١﴾ مِنۡ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَۙ‏ ﴿٢﴾ وَمِنۡ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَۙ‏ ﴿٣﴾ وَمِنۡ شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّٰثَٰتِ فِى ٱلۡعُقَدِۙ‏ ﴿٤﴾ وَمِنۡ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ ﴿٥﴾

Terjemahan: With the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil of the darkening (night) as it comes with its darkness, and from the evil of those who practice witchcraft when they blow in the knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies.

Transliterasi: Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem. Qul ‘a’oothu birabbil-falaq. Min sharri maa khalaq. Wa min sharri ghaasiqin ‘ithaa waqab. Wa min sharrin-naffaathaati fil-‘uqad. Wa min sharri haasidin ‘ithaa hasad.

iii. Surah al-Naas (114)

قُلۡ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِۙ‏ ﴿١﴾ مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِۙ‏ ﴿٢﴾ إِلَٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِۙ‏ ﴿٣﴾ مِنۡ شَرِّ ٱلۡوَسۡوَاسِ ۙ ٱلۡخَـنَّاسِ ۙ‏﴿٤﴾ ٱلَّذِىۡ يُوَسۡوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِۙ‏ ﴿٥﴾ مِنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ ﴿٦﴾

Terjemahan: With the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, who whispers in the breasts of mankind, of jinns and men.

Transliterasi: Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem. Qul ‘a’oothu birabbin-naas. Malikin-naas. ‘Ilaahin-naas. Min sharril-waswaasil-khannaas. Allathee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin-naas. Minal-jinnati wannaas.

2. Ayatul Kursi – Surah Al-Baqarah (2:255)

Whoever reads Ayatul Kursi when he lies down to sleep will have a guardian from Allah remain with him and Satan will not be able to come near him until he rises in the morning.

أَللَّٰهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلۡحَـىُّ ٱلۡقَيُّومُ

Terjemahan: Allah! There is none worthy of worship but He, the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists.

Transliterasi: Allaahu laa ‘ilaaha ‘illaa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyoom,

لَا تَاۡخُذُهُۥ سِنَةٌ وَّلَا نَومٌ

Terjemahan: Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him.

Transliterasi: laa ta’khuthuhu sinatun wa laa nawm,

لَهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ

Terjemahan:

To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.

Transliterasi: lahu maa fis-samaawaati wa maafil-‘ardh,

مَنۡ ذَا ٱلَّذِىۡ يَشۡفَعُ عِنۡدَهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِهِۦ

Terjemahan: Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission?

Transliterasi: man thal-lathee yashfa’u ‘indahu ‘illaa bi’ithnih,

يَعۡلَمُ مَا بَينَ أَيدِيهِمۡ وَمَا خَلۡفَهُمۡ

Terjemahan: He knows what happens to them in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter.

Transliterasi: ya’lamu maa bayna ‘aydeehim wa maa khalfahum,

وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَىءٍ مِّنۡ عِلۡمِهِۦ إِلَّا بِمَا شَآءَ

Terjemahan: And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills.

Transliterasi: wa laa yuheetoona bishay’im-min ‘ilmihi ‘illaa bimaa shaa’a,

وَسِعَ كُرۡسِيُّهُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَالۡأَرۡضَ

Terjemahan: His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth,

Transliterasi: wasi’a kursiyyuhus-samaawaati wal’ardh,

وَلَا يَـــُٔودُهُۥ حِفۡظُهُمَا

Terjemahan: and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them.

Transliterasi: wa laa ya’ooduhu hifdhuhumaa,

وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَلِىُّ ٱلۡعَظِيمُ‏

Terjemahan: And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Transliterasi: wa Huwal-‘Aliyyul- ‘Adheem.

3. Last 2 Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (2:285-286)

Whoever recites the last two Ayahs of Surah al-Baqarah at night, those two Aayahs shall be sufficient for him.

ءَامَنَ ٱلرَّسُولُ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡهِ مِن رَّبِّهِۦ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَۚ كُلٌّ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَمَلَٰٓئِكَتِهِۦ وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَرُسُلِهِۦ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيۡنَ أَحَدٖ مِّن رُّسُلِهِۦۚ وَقَالُواْ سَمِعۡنَا وَأَطَعۡنَاۖ غُفۡرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيۡكَ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ

Terjemahan: The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying] , “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination.” 

Transliterasi: Aamanar-Rasoolu bimaa ‘unzila ilayhi mir-Rabbihi walmu’minoon, kullun ‘aamana billaahi wa malaa’ikatihi wa Kutubihi wa Rusulihi, laa nufarriqu bayna ‘ahadim-mir-Rusulihi, wa qaaloo sami’naa wa ‘ata’naa ghufraanaka Rabbanaa wa ‘ilaykal-maseer.

لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفۡسًا إِلَّا وُسۡعَهَاۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتۡ وَعَلَيۡهَا مَا ٱكۡتَسَبَتۡۗ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذۡنَآ إِن نَّسِينَآ أَوۡ أَخۡطَأۡنَاۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحۡمِلۡ عَلَيۡنَآ إِصۡرٗا كَمَا حَمَلۡتَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِنَاۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلۡنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِۦۖ وَٱعۡفُ عَنَّا وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَٱرۡحَمۡنَآۚ أَنتَ مَوۡلَىٰنَا فَٱنصُرۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ

Terjemahan: Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. “Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.”

Transliterasi: Laa yukallifullaahu nafsan ‘illaa wus’ahaa, lahaa maa kasabat wa ‘alayhaa mak-tasabat, Rabbanaa laa tu’aakhithnaa ‘in naseenaa ‘aw ‘akhta’naa, Rabbanaa wa laa tahmil ‘alaynaa ‘isran kamaa hamaltahu ‘alal-latheena min qablinaa, Rabbanaa wa laa tuhammilnaa maa laa taaqata lanaa bihi, wa’fu ‘annaa, waghfir lanaa warhamnaa, ‘Anta Mawlaanaa fansurnaa ‘alal-qawmil-kaafireen.

4. If Rises from the Bed and Return to It Afterwards

If one of you rises from his bed and then returns to it he should dust it with the edge of his garment three times for he does not know what has occurred in his absence and when he lies down he should supplicate:

بِاسۡمِكَ رَبِّى وَضَعۡتُ جَنۡبِى وَبِكَ أَرۡفَعُهُ فَإِنۡ أَمۡسَكۡتَ نَفۡسِى فارۡحَمۡهَا وَإِنۡ أَرۡسَلۡتَهَا فَاحۡفَظۡهَا بِمَا تَحۡفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ ٱلصَّالِحِينَ

Terjemahan: In Your name my Lord, I lie down and in Your name I rise, so if You should take my soul then have mercy upon it, and if You should return my soul then protect it in the manner You do so with Your righteous servants.

Transliterasi: Bismika Rabbee wadha’tu janbee , wa bika ‘arfa’uhu, fa’in ‘amsakta nafsee farhamhaa, wa ‘in ‘arsaltahaa fahfadhhaa, bimaa tahfadhu bihi ‘ibaadakas-saaliheen.

5. Before Sleeping Dua

أَللَّٰهُمَّ إِنَّكَ خَلَقۡتَ نَفۡسِى وَأَنۡتَ تَوَفَّاهَا لَكَ مَمَاتُهَا وَمَحۡيَاهَا إِنۡ أَحۡيَيتَهَا فَاحۡفَظۡهَا وَإِنۡ أَمَتَّهَا فَاغۡفِرۡ لَهَا أَللَّٰهُمَّ إِنِّى أَسۡأَلُكَ ٱلۡعَافِيَةَ

Terjemahan: O Allaah, verily You have created my soul and You shall take it’s life, to You belong it’s life and death. If You should keep my soul alive then protect it, and if You should take its life then forgive it. O Allaah, I ask You to grant me good health.

Transliterasi: Allaahwmma ‘innaka khalaqta nafsee wa ‘Anta tawaffaahaa, laka mamaatuhaa wa mahyaahaa, ‘in ‘ahyaytahaa fahfadhhaa, wa ‘in ‘amattahaa faghfir lahaa . Allaahumma ‘innee ‘as’alukal-‘aafiyata.

6 When about to Sleep

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) would place his right hand under his cheek when about to sleep and supplicate:

أَللَّٰهُمَّ قِنِى عَذَابَكَ يَومَ تَبۡعَثُ عِبَادَكَ

Terjemahan: O Allaah, protect me from Your punishment on the day Your servants are resurrected.

Transliterasi: ‘Allaahumma qinee ‘athaabaka yawma tab’athu ‘ibaadaka.

7. Dua when Sleeping

بِاسۡمِكَ أَللَّٰهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحۡيَا

Terjemahan: In Your name O Allaah, I live and die.

Transliterasi: Bismika Allaahumma ‘amootu wa ‘ahyaa.

8. Dua That is Better Than a Servant

Shall I not direct you both to something better than a servant? When you go to bed say:’

سُبۡحَانَ ٱللَّهِ

Terjemahan: How Perfect Allaah is

Transliterasi: Subhaanallaahi

. ….thirty-three times

وَالۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ

Terjemahan: All praise is for Allaah.

Transliterasi: Walhamdu lillaahi

…thirty-three times

وَاللَّهُ أَكۡبَرُ

Terjemahan: Allaah is the greatest

Transliterasi: Wallaahu ‘akbar.

…thirty-four times…for that is indeed better for you both than a servant.

9. Defore Sleeping Dhikr

اَللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَرَبَّ الْأَرْضِ، وَرَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، رَبَّنَا وَرَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ، فَالِقَ الْحَبِّ وَالنَّوَى، وَمُنْزِلَ التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنْجِيلِ، وَالْفُرْقَانِ، أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ أَنْتَ آخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهِ

Terjemahan: O Allaah, Lord of the seven heavens and the exalted throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, Splitter of the seed and the date stone, Revealer of the Towraat, the Injeel and the Furqaan, I take refuge in You from the evil of all things You shall seize by the forelock.

Transliterasi: Allaahumma Rabbas-samaawaatis-sab’i wa Rabbal-‘Arshil-‘Adheem, Rabbanaa wa Rabba kulli shay ‘in, faaliqal-habbi wannawaa , wa munzilat-Tawraati wal-‘Injeeli, wal-Furqaani, ‘a’oothu bika min sharri kulli shay ‘in ‘Anta ‘aakhithun binaasiyatihi.

أَللَّٰهُمَّ أَنۡتَ ٱلۡأَوَّلُ فَلَيسَ قَبۡلَكَ شَيءٌ وَأَنۡتَ ٱلۡآخِرُ فَلَيسَ بَعۡدَكَ شَيءٌ وَأَنۡتَ ٱلظَّاهِرُ فَلَيسَ فَوقَكَ شَيءٌ وَأَنۡتَ ٱلۡبَاطِنُ فَلَيسَ دُونَكَ شَيءٌ إِقۡضِ عَنَّا ٱلدَّينَ وَأَغۡنِنَا مِنَ ٱلۡفَقۡرِ

Terjemahan: O Allaah, You are The First so there is nothing before You and You are The Last so there is nothing after You. You are ath-Thaahir so there is nothing above You and You are al-Baatin so there is nothing closer than You. Settle our debt for us and spare us from poverty.

Transliterasi: Allaahumma ‘Antal-‘Awwalu falaysa qablaka shay’un, wa ‘Antal-‘Aakhiru falaysa ba’daka shay’un, wa ‘Antadh-Dhaahiru falaysa fawqaka shay’un, wa ‘Antal-Baatinu falaysa doonaka shay’un, iqdhi ‘annad-dayna wa ‘aghninaa minal-faqri.

10. Dua of Sleeping

أَلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِى أَطۡعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَكَفَانَا وَءَاوَانَا فَكَمۡ مِمَّنۡ لَا كَافِىَ لَهُ وَلَا مُؤۡوِيَ

Terjemahan: All praise is for Allaah, Who fed us and gave us drink, and Who is sufficient for us and has sheltered us, for how many have none to suffice them or shelter them.

Transliterasi: Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee ‘at’amanaa wa saqaanaa, wa kafaanaa, wa ‘aawaanaa, fakam mimman laa kaafiya lahu wa laa mu’wiya.

11. Sleeping Time Dua

أَللَّٰهُمَّ عَالِمَ ٱلۡغَيبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَاطِرَ ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ وَالۡأَرۡضِ رَبَّ كُلِّ شَيءٍ وَمَلِيكَهُ أَشۡهَدُ أَنۡ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنۡتَ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنۡ شَرِّ نَفۡسِى وَمِنۡ شَرِّ ٱلشَّيطانِ وَشِرۡكِهِ وَأَنۡ أَقۡتَرِفَ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِى سُوٓءًا أَو أَجُرَّهُۥ إِلَىٰ مُسۡلِمٍ

Terjemahan: O Allaah, Knower of the seen and the unseen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord and Sovereign of all things I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You. I take refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil and shirk of the devil, and from committing wrong against my soul or bringing such upon another Muslim.

Transliterasi: Allaahumma ‘Aalimal-ghaybi wash-shahaadati faatiras-samaawaati wal’ardhi, Rabba kulli shay ‘in wa maleekahu, ‘ash-hadu ‘an laa ‘ilaaha ‘illaa ‘Anta, ‘a’oothu bika min sharri nafsee, wa min sharrish-shaytaani wa shirkihi, wa ‘an ‘aqtarifa ‘alaa nafsee soo ‘an, ‘aw ‘ajurrahu ‘ilaa Muslimin.

12. Reciting Surah Al-Mulk & As-Sajdah

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) never used to sleep until he had recited Surah as-Sajdah (Surah 32) and Surah al-Mulk (Surah 67).

13. Dying upon the Fitrah

If you take to your bed, then perform ablution, lie on your right side and then supplicate:

أَللَّٰهُمَّ أَسۡلَمۡتُ نَفۡسِى إِلَيكَ وَفَوَّضۡتُ أَمۡرِى إِلَيكَ وَوَجَّهۡتُ وَجۡهِى إِلَيكَ وَأَلۡجَأۡتُ ظَهۡرِى إِلَيكَ رَغۡبَةً وَّرَهۡبَةً إِلَيكَ لَا مَلۡجَأَ وَلَا مَنۡجَا مِنۡكَ إِلَّا إِلَيكَ ءَامَنۡتُ بِكِتَابِكَ ٱلَّذِى أَنۡزَلۡتَ وَبِنَبِيِّكَ ٱلَّذِى أَرۡسَلۡتَ

Terjemahan: O Allaah, I submit my soul unto You, and I entrust my affair unto You, and I turn my face towards You, and I totally rely on You, in hope and fear of You. Verily there is no refuge nor safe haven from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.

Transliterasi: Allaahumma ‘aslamtu nafsee ‘ilayka, wa fawwadhtu ‘amree ‘ilayka, wa wajjahtu wajhee ‘ilayka, wa ‘alja’tu dhahree ‘ilayka, raghbatan wa rahbatan ‘ilayka, laa maalja’ wa laa manja minka ‘illaa ‘ilayka, ‘aamantu bikitaabikal-lathee ‘anzalta wa bi-nabiyyikal-lathee ‘arsalta.

…If you then die, you will die upon the fitrah.

14. When Turning Over During the Night

‘Aaishah (radhi-yAllaahu ‘Anhaa) narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) used to say at night if he turned during sleep:

لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡوَاحِدُ ٱلۡقَهَّارُ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ وَالۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَينَهُمَا ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡغَفَّارُ

Terjemahan: There is none worthy of worship but Allah, the One, the Victorious, Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the All-Mighty, the All-Forgiving.

Transliterasi: Laa ‘ilaaha ‘illallaahul-Waahidul-Qahhaaru, Rabbus-samaawaati wal’ardhi wa maa baynahumal-‘Azeezul-Ghaffaaru.

15. Upon Experiencing Fear or Unrest During Sleep

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلتَّامَّاتِ مِنۡ غَضَبِهِ وَعِقَابِهِ وَشَرِّ عِبَادِهِ وَمِنۡ هَمَزَاتِ ٱلشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَنۡ يَحۡضُرُونِ

Terjemahan: I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, from the evil of His slaves and from the taunts of devils and from their presence.

Transliterasi: A’oothu bikalimaatil-laahit-taammaati min ghadhabihi wa ‘iqaabihi, wa sharri ‘ibaadihi, wa min hamazaatish-shayaateeni wa ‘an yahdhuroon.

16. Upon Seeing a Good or a Bad Dream
